Scholarship Description
This scholarship honors Randall Leo “Junkman” Jones. Randy pitched in Major League Baseball for the San Diego Padres and New York Mets being named as the National League Pitcher of the Year and winning the Cy Young Award in 1976. He was also selected as the left-handed pitcher on The Sporting News NL All-Star Teams after the 1975 and 1976 seasons. Jones owns the distinction of recording a save for the NL in the 1975 All Star game and being the starting and winning pitcher the next year. He entered the 1976 All-Star Game with a record of 16-3, an All Star break win total that no one has equaled since. After his retirement, Jones’ uniform No. 35 was retired by the San Diego Padres. In 1996, Jones was inducted by the San Diego Hall of Champions into the Breitbard Hall of Fame which honors San Diego’s finest athletes both on and off the field. In addition, he was inducted as part of the inaugural San Diego Padres Hall of Fame Class in 1999. Randy continues to be active with his former team, leading the SD Padres Alumni Players group. He also is the founder and Chairman of the Board of the Board of The Randy Jones foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in San Diego, Calif. that seeks to provide new opportunities and / or resources for kids from military families to participate in local sporting events, programs, and outdoor activities.
